Back to the Flax

Collective of eleven designers from the Design Academy Eindhoven, supported and represented by Kazerne.

On a 1,000 m² plot of land in Gijzenrooi, the group cultivates, harvests, and processes flax entirely by hand - exploring both traditional and experimental techniques. Each member brings a unique background and personal approach to working with flax, revealing the possibilities of this ancient material. By placing process at the center, the collective celebrates the beauty of movement, the wisdom of old knowledge, and the revival of traditional craftsmanship.

Through workshops and active participation, Back to the Flax connects people to local agriculture and craft, encouraging a deeper relationship with materials that come from the land.

Dutch Design Week 2025
Facing the limitations of industrial infrastructure in processing flax into linen, new ways of using, recycling, and sharing the material emerge, applying traditional craft in new ways. This installation showcases flax at various stages of processing, highlighting the unique properties of each phase. The work proposes a sensitive approach to the material, an invitation to slow down, reconnect with matter and traditional craft methods, and reconsider how materials and communities can grow together.
