Waves in the Skate Park

In Czech, the surfers long for the ocean. Many of us make up for it by finding places where we can skate. In a previously abandoned building, we built an indoor skatepark, and I was asked to design a piece to light the main space. After sourcing the materials and experimenting, I brought the community together to create the final shape. We used a large segment of a fence that, when bent, holds its shape and reminds us of the waves.

I invited all the kids of these skaters and wanted to introduce them to painting and abstract sculpture. We played with spray paints, painted and molded the net into its shape. Afterwards, all of us hung the sculpture from the ceiling and attached lights for late-night skate sessions and competitions.
